This classic gay pulp novel from the 1970’s features the tried and true formula of star-crossed lovers from the wrong side of the tracks set in the unique world of traveling circus performers. Mike is the sheltered son of an old-world trapeze family traveling the US with the Prince Royal Circus. Roustabout Jerry is a rootless orphan, one of the faceless behind-the-scenes crew who put up and break down tents and attractions as the show moves from town to town. One is a star, the other has nothing but a motorcycle and his dreams of becoming a stunt rides: their romance breaks all the rules of circus society. Can they stay the course and prove that love conquers all?

The story of the Lakers dynasty from 1996 through 2004, when Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal combined—and collided—to help bring the Lakers three straight championships and restore the franchise as a powerhouse In the history of modern sport, there have never been two high-level teammates who loathed each other the way Shaquille O’Neal loathed Kobe Bryant, and Kobe Bryant loathed Shaquille O’Neal. From public sniping and sparring, to physical altercations and the repeated threats of trade, it was warfare. And yet, despite eight years of infighting and hostility, by turns mediated and encouraged by coach Phil Jackson, the Shaq-Kobe duo resulted in one of the greatest dynasties in NBA history. Together, the two led the Lakers to three straight championships and returned glory and excitement to Los Angeles. In the tradition of Jeff Pearlman’s bestsellers Showtime, Boys Will Be Boys, and The Bad Guys Won, Three-Ring Circus is a rollicking deep dive into one of sports’ most fraught yet successful pairings.

Three Ring Circus offers an honest and entertaining, behind-the-scenes experience of large family missionary life from the perspective of a true insider--one of the kids. Witness the most exciting aspects of eighteen years of mission work in the Philippines--a vibrant backdrop that includes natural disasters, terrorist organizations, and culture shock. Meet a growing family, learn why the parents decided to become missionaries, and discover what led them to abandon birth control. The journey is filled with strange and amusing occurrences, like a family debacle with hepatitis spread via toothpaste, and deals with complex emotions, including personal wrestling with the church. More than anything, the story is transparent, with open dialogue about the joyous and tragic alike. "Luke Gray's Three Ring Circus lives up to its title. For anyone considering a move overseas, this book is hilarious, but it's also a realistic look at the opportunities and problems faced by Americans who move offshore. Luke's comments on a healthy marital physical relationship are alone worth the price of the book. Enjoy." John Price, author of The End of America "A delightful mosaic of story and insight--entertaining enough that you are unable to put it down and reflective enough that you are unable to read without pondering your own journey." Daniel McCoy, author of The Atheist's Fatal Flaw "Three Ring Circus is a cross between Eight is Enough and The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, full of family fun, cross-cultural contrasts, and solid purpose." Terese Thonus Ph.D, Director for the University of Kansas Writing Center

From ringmasters to clowns, animal trainers to trapeze artists, Indiana's long association with the circus industry is highlighted in the new Indiana Historical Society publication Life in a Three-Ring Circus: Posters and Interviews. The book features full-color posters from the Society's collection and oral histories from Hoosiers who participated in life under the big top. The Hoosier State's involvement with the circus springs from the work of two men: William Cameron Coup and Benjamin Wallace. Born in 1837 in Mount Pleasant, Indiana, Coup "perfected the technique of plastering the countryside with gaudy posters," while Wallace founded the Great Wallace Circus in Peru, Indiana, in 1884. The posters in Life in a Three-Ring Circus represent several circuses with and without Indiana ties, including: Clyde Beatty, Clyde Beatty-Cole Brothers, Famous George W. Cole, Cole Brothers, Cristiani Brothers, Hagen Brothers, Hagenbeck-Wallace, Al G. Kelly and Miller Brothers, Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey, and Russell Brothers. Among the stories highlighted in the book are these of John Fugate, ringmaster, International Circus Hall of Fame; Tom Dunwoody, president, International Circus Hall of Fame; Mickey King, retired trapeze artist who was famous for her one-armed swings; Mena Ball, retired acrobat who performed in front of Hitler; Pat Kelly, circus clown and son of famous clown Emmett Kelly; Gilbert Taylor, curator of the Crispus Attucks Museum and son of a circus sideshow musician; Ruby Haag Brown, animal trainer and circus performer who was carried about in an elephant's mouth; Joyce Ferguson, retired performer and daughter of Clyde Beatty, animal trainer extraordinaire; G. G. Dawson, owner, manager, and performer in a medicine show; and Lillian Leitzel and Alfredo Codona, aerialists, who shared a tragic circus romance.

As I mention in the prologue of the book, a man who was my mentor once said to me. Tommy the easiest thing in the world to do is make a buck. You can shine shoes, deliver news papers, stack groceries and many other mundane things. But the hardest thing in this world to do is make a buck doing what you love to do. Hence the title of this book. I have been lucky enough to be able to make a buck doing what I loved to do in four careers. First, being in World War II. Second, performing in show business and being involved in the beginning of Television. Third, creating music for the advertising business and fourth, retiring and enjoying the sights in this big beautiful world of ours. By remembering many of the amusing things that happened and be able to pass them on to you readers, fulfills my purpose in writing this autobiography.

Ruth Crawford Seeger (1901-1953) is frequently considered the most significant American female composer in this century. Joining Aaron Copland and Henry Cowell as a key member of the 1920s musical avant-garde, she went on to study with modernist theorist and future husband Charles Seeger, writing her masterpiece, String Quartet 1931, not long after. But her legacy extends far beyond the cutting edge of modern music. Collaborating with poet Carl Sandburg on folk song arrangements in the twenties, and with the famous folk-song collectors John and Alan Lomax in the 1930s, she emerged as a central figure in the American folk music revival, issuing several important books of transcriptions and arrangements and pioneering the use of American folk songs in children's music education. Radicalized by the Depression, she spent much of the ensuing two decades working aggressively for social change with her husband and stepson, the folksinger Pete Seeger. This engrossing new biography emphasizes the choices Crawford Seeger made in her roles as composer, activist, teacher, wife and mother. The first woman to win a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in music composition, Crawford Seeger nearly gave up writing music as the demands of family, politics, and the folk song movement intervened. It was only at the very end of her life, with cancer sapping her strength, that she returned to composing. Written with unique insight and compassion, this book offers the definitive treatment of a fascinating twentieth-century figure.
