The first major biography of Levon Helm, the legendary drummer and singer of the Band. Through rigorous research and interviews with close friends and fellow musicians, author Sandra B. Tooze (Muddy Waters: The Mojo Man) has written an original, insightful investigation of the relentless perseverance that propelled Levon Helm from Southern cotton fields to the global limelight, and that kept him in the game despite career collapse, near bankruptcy, and what he saw as devastating betrayal by his closest friend, Band guitarist Robbie Robertson. Levon Helm claimed that his drum stool was the best seat in the house. From that vantage point back in his childhood home of Turkey Scratch, Arkansas, he saw the convergence of musical styles--blues, country, and R&B--that would coalesce into rockabilly and then rock. Later, he became integral to the evolution of popular music, joining the raucous rockabilly group Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks, then merging hard-driving rock with Bob Dylan's folk roots, and revolutionizing American rock with the Band. He not only provided the perfect "in the pocket" rhythm and unforgettable high-lonesome voice for many of the Band's greatest songs, but he was also the Band's soul. While performing as one of the premier drummers of modern music, Helm sang the anthems of a generation: "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "Up on Cripple Creek," "Rag Mama Rag, "Life Is a Carnival," and "The Weight." As a member of the Band, Levon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received the Grammy's Lifetime Achievement Award. He also acted in eighteen movies, including Coal Miner's Daughter and The Right Stuff. Cancer robbed Helm of his voice in 1997, yet he endured. Eventually, through dogged determination, he regained his ability to sing. His final decade was a triumph of spirit and talent, as he opened his barn to the Midnight Rambles and earned three Grammy wins. Cancer finally took him in 2012 when he was at the top of his game. Universally loved and admired, he was described by Bob Dylan as "my bosom buddy friend to the end, one of the last true great spirits of my or any other generation." Levon is the complex, transcendent, and uplifting story of a singing drummer from Turkey Scratch who became a legend of American music.
(Book). Levon Helm's Rambles have quickly become the stuff of legend. Helm, of course, is the charismatic drummer, singer, and sometimes mandolin picker for The Band, a group whose songs and stature have made them a pillar of classic rock and rootsy Americana. Beyond their work with Bob Dylan, their own hits ("Up on Cripple Creek," "The Weight," "The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down," to name just a few) have landed them in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the consciousness of music fans everywhere. The Ramble was Levon's down-home jam session for friends and fans, held on Saturday nights in his studio "Barn" in Woodstock. Levon based his Ramble Sessions on the Southern medicine shows of his youth, and has invited some of the most notable blues entertainers and musicians of our time to perform with him including Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, Rickie Lee Jones, Clarence Clemons, Allison Krauss and others. This book is the official record of these incredibly intimate sessions: the next best thing to being there. Accompanying the spectacular photos are testimonials and remembrances from the superstars who have joined the Ramble.
“Helm lays it all bare in vivid, impassioned prose, adding an earthly, backwoods tone that makes the book read like a Southern novel, like Thomas Wolfe writing about rock ’n’ roll.” —Boston Globe “One of the most insightful and intelligent rock bios in recent memory.” —Entertainment Weekly The Band, who backed Bob Dylan when he went electric in 1965 and then turned out a half-dozen albums of beautifully crafted, image-rich songs, is now regarded as one of the most influential rock groups of the '60s. But while their music evoked a Southern mythology, only their Arkansawyer drummer, Levon Helm, was the genuine article. From the cotton fields to Woodstock, from seeing Sonny Boy Williamson and Elvis Presley to playing for President Clinton, This Wheel’s on Fire replays the tumultuous history of our times in Levon’s own unforgettable folksy drawl. This edition is expanded with a new epilogue covering the last dozen years of Levon's life. Levon Helm (1940-2012) met Ronnie Hawkins at the age of 17 and formed what would soon become The Band. He maintained a successful career as a singer and actor until his death. Stephen Davis is the author of Hammer of the Gods: The Led Zeppelin Saga; More Room in a Broken Heart: The True Adventures of Carly Simon; Old Gods Almost Dead: The 40-Year Odyssey of the Rolling Stones; Jim Morrison: Life, Death, Legend; Walk This Way: The Autobiography of Aerosmith; and others.
For Levon, Ophelia was the love that made all the other loves irrelevant. But when he lost her, he lost everything. Until he met Jake, a 16-year-old who recently witnessed his best friend's suicide. Jake teaches Levon that he still has so much life to live and can no longer hide from the world. Together, Jake and Levon learn how to right the mistakes of their past, while simultaneously writing their future into existence.
Poetry. LEVON HELM is Jason Morris' first full-length collection, a picaresque situated in the drum and voice of mind. Like the drummer-singer with whom it shares a name, its influences are broad but firmly American. Along with bits torn from the edges of Moby-Dick and The Maltese Falcon, it mines the margins of Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation. As it takes stock of the immediacy and scale of places in the American West like Pinnacles and the Puget Sound, its psychic roots dig a haunted, old New England. These lyric poems are takes on human memory in geological time, as interested in their own asides and parentheticals as they are in the elements.
Preserving Armenia's rich literary tradition from a multitude of viewpoints has been the aim of this three-volume work. This third volume joins the previous two in making excerpts of Armenian masterpieces accessible in beautifully rendered English translations, while enabling readers to enjoy the immediacy of these works through lively discussions of the authors and their times. Here the focus is on the eighteenth through twentieth centuries. The volume begins with a comprehensive overview of the entire historical, social, and literary panorama of the periods covered: the Armenian Renaissance, the development of modern Armenian (with its Western and Eastern versions), the emergence of a national identity and democratic thinking (with their impact on literature and theater), and such literary schools as Romanticism, Realism, and Aestheticism. Biographies of more than 130 prominent authors appear in these pages, together with critical comments concerning their works and extensive excerpts from the works themselves. The texts are edited, annotated with footnotes, and presented in a format that permits easy comprehension. Literature unveils a rich pageant of works in historical perspective. The varied experiences from the Armenian past come alive, allowing for new understandings and comparisons to literatures of other nations.
